Shambhala Rainforest Reteat - Port Douglas Luxury Accommodation
Legend has it Shambhala is a mythical kingdom where heaven and earth meet. In this gentle valley in the foothills of the Daintree rainforest mountains, an oasis of tropical comfort merges two worlds into a new reality.
Shambhala's soothing charms are immediately apparent. The property comprises three pavilions, each one stepped back and diminishing in size. Enter and you are in the first pavilion which houses the main bedroom, study, laundry and car port.
The second pavilion is a deliciously open lounge with a wide verandah, a superb kitchen and a media room. The third pavilion houses two guestrooms with ensuites.
Sweeping views over the expansive gardens and evergreen lawns out to Thornton's Peak flow from every aspect.
An open, inviting corridor, a high raked ceiling and spacious, welcoming bedrooms with views from every angle all combine to make Shambhala a magnet for lovers of tropical, indoor outdoor living. The air here feels wonderful and moves around in a drift of a breeze that is almost musical.
Kwila bifold doors are the only barriers to nature. A soothing neutral colour scheme enhances natural light, as does the use of glass against the renewable timbers used in Shambhala's construction.
From the roof, rainwater runs directly into the courtyard gardens. Watering is supplemented by a high yielding bore with quality water sourced from a deep natural spring which supplies the house. A backup tank completes the set up.
The grounds are a gardener's delight with evergreen lawns sweeping down to mature fruit trees. Around the three pavilions of the house, fragrant gingers, luscious lip stick palms and screening heliconias form a border.
There's a palpable connection between the house - which almost seems to breathe - and the World Heritage-listed rainforest outside. Breezeways, relaxing courtyards, a divine wet edge pool all invite you to linger and be in the moment ... in the tropics... in the oasis of Shambhala.
